| A New Role in the Cloud for a Tried and Tested Schemaless Database |
One of the more interesting aspects of the Cloud Computing revolution has been the emergence of schemaless and hierarchical databases which, it is asserted, are more readily able to meet the demands and requirements of the Cloud than the once dominant relational model. Although many of the new databases have been developed from the ground up, there have, in fact, been a number of existing, tried and tested schemaless database technologies lurking in the marketplace before the advent of Cloud Computing. These are now emerging as important and highly functional engines on which to build Cloud services.
In this session, Rob Tweed and KS Bhaskar will introduce one such product, the free, open source GT.M database which has been used by M/Gateway Developments to build their M/DB familiy of open source, cloud-ready databases, including M/DB:S: a SimpleDB clone, and M/DB:X: a unique lightweight JSON/Native XML Hybrid Database. They will explain how and why GT.M was chosen for these products, not least because of its enviable pedigree in the high-end banking industry where, just as in the Cloud, the need for scalability, resilience and total reliability is paramount.
Speaker Bios:
Rob Tweed is a director and co-founder of M/Gateway Developments Ltd, a UK company specializing in Web, internet and integration technologies since 1996. He has assisted major companies worldwide to develop enterprise-scale Web applications and is the developer of the design-focused Enterprise Web Developer (EWD) AJAX development framework. More recently M/Gateway has begun focusing on schemaless database technologies for use in the Cloud. Rob is the developer of M/DB, an Open Source API-compatible alternative to SimpleDB and M/DB:X, a cloud-ready Native XML Database.
K S Bhaskar is VP, Product Manager at Fidelity National Information Services, Inc.
